1 Thessalonians chapter 5

Paul informs us about the End of Days. He calls us to be holy. He tells us God’s will for us. And he concludes this great Letter.

THE END OF DAYS

VERSE 1. But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.

you have no need that anything be written to you. Paul says there’s no need for him to rehash the details about those things. But that’s exactly what he does.

Maybe Paul rehashes these things in order to REMIND them. Much of Christian ministry consists of reminding believers about things they already know:

1 Thessalonians 3:10. night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face, and may perfect that which is lacking in your faith?

1 Thessalonians 5:1. But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that anything be written to you.

2 Peter 1:12. Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth.

2 Peter 3:1. This is now, beloved, the second letter that I have written to you; and in both of them I stir up your sincere mind by reminding you,

VERSE 2. For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord comes like a thief in the night.

the day of the Lord. There’s an event that Paul calls the day of the Lord. That means the End of Days, the moment when Jesus Christ returns in triumphal glory. In the movies, they call it Armageddon.

like a thief in the night. The return of Jesus Christ will set in motion the resurrection of the dead, the rapture of the living, the Final Judgment, the end of our corporeal existence, and eternal life.

This glorious return of the Lord will catch everybody off-guard, including us believers. It will be unexpected, like a thief in the night.

However, some people insist they know exactly when it will happen. They are false prophets. One very famous false prophet of our day was Harold Camping. He said Judgment Day would take place on May 21, 2011. He convinced people into giving him millions of dollars. His claim was false. His ideas originated in his own mind, and not from God.

Deuteronomy 18:22. When a prophet speaks in the LORD’s name, if the thing doesn’t follow, nor happen, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously. You shall not be afraid of him.

Jeremiah 23:16. the LORD of Hosts says, “Don’t listen to the words of the [false] prophets who prophesy to you. They teach you vanity. They speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD.”

Matthew 24:4. Jesus answered them, “Be careful that no one leads you astray.”

Matthew 24:36. But no one knows of that day and hour, not even the angels of heaven, but my Father only.

Matthew 24:44. Therefore also be ready, for in an hour that you don’t expect, the Son of Man will come.

Matthew 25:13. Watch therefore, for you don’t know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

VERSE 3. For when they are saying, “Peace and safety,” then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant woman. Then they will in no way escape.

Peace and safety. Movies make it seem like the time leading up to the Return of Christ will be an unprecedented era of doom and gloom, wars and bloodshed. However, Paul shows us that it won’t be like that at all. The timeframe will be when everything is peaceful and secure. There won’t be any buildup to the event.

Jeremiah 5:12. They have denied the LORD, and said, “It is not he. Evil will won’t come on us. We won’t see sword or famine.

Jeremiah 6:14. They have healed also the hurt of my people superficially, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace.

Jeremiah 23:17. They say continually to those who despise me, ‘The LORD has said, “You will have peace;” ’ and to everyone who walks in the stubbornness of his own heart they say, ‘No evil will come on you.’

Matthew 24:29. But immediately after the suffering of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken

1 Thessalonians 5:3. When people are saying, “Everything is peaceful and secure,” then disaster will fall on them as suddenly as a pregnant woman’s labor pains begin. And there will be no escape.” (NLT translation)

sudden destruction. The End of Days will happen suddenly. People won’t be able to hide from it.

in no way escape. There will be no escape. There will be no coming back from this one. Fleeing will be futile. It will be a one-way ticket to eternity.

VERSE 4. But you, brothers, aren’t in darkness, that the day should overtake you like a thief.

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the First Letter to the Thessalonians and from the entire Bible.

aren’t in darkness. Even though we believers don’t know when these events will happen, we are not in the dark. We can be prepared for it by living in a state of perpetual readiness. We can prepare for it by reading what the Bible has to say about the End of Days. It boils down to how much we care to inform ourselves about it.

VERSE 5. You are all children of light and children of the day. We don’t belong to the night, nor to darkness,

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the First Letter to the Thessalonians and from the entire Bible.

children of the light. By God’s grace, we have been illumined. The light of Christ resides within us. The more we dig into the Bible to inform ourselves about these important issues, the less our own fears and misinformation will occlude that light.

We don’t belong to the night. We are not of the night or of darkness. The Prince of Darkness does not reside within us. We are not captives of the evil one. And we don’t let ourselves persist in biblical ignorance.

VERSE 6. so then let’s not sleep, as the rest do, but let’s watch and be sober.

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the First Letter to the Thessalonians and from the entire Bible.

let’s not sleep. We are not to be indifferent about the End of Days. Paul puts it this way: let us not sleep. Many Christians have a lethargy when it comes to investigating the biblical teachings about the End of Days.

let’s watch and be sober. When it comes to biblical prophecy, let us stay alert and sober. Let’s look into it. Let’s inform ourselves of the truths that God has freely given us. After all, it is the truth that sets us free!

John 8:32. You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.

VERSE 7. For those who sleep, sleep in the night; and those who are drunk are drunk in the night.

VERSE 8. But since we belong to the day, let’s be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet, the hope of salvation.

VERSE 9. For God didn’t appoint us to wrath, but to the obtaining of salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

wrath. The Greek word is orgé. It means anger, wrath, passion, punishment, vengeance. God has not called us to receive that.

salvation. The Greek word is sōtēris. It means welfare, prosperity, deliverance, preservation, salvation, safety. This is our calling.

VERSE 10. who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.

who died for us. This is telling us exactly why Christ died. He died FOR US. This is a very, very useful verse.

VERSE 11. Therefore exhort one another, and build each other up, even as you also do.

exhort one another. The Greek word is παρακαλεῖτε (“parakaleite”). It means to comfort, to encourage, to exhort.

build each other up. The Greek word is οἰκοδομεῖτε (“oikodomeite”). It means to build a house. In this context it means to build someone up, to help them stand.

BE HOLY

VERSE 12. But we beg you, brothers, to know those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord, and admonish you,

THIS IS THE WILL OF GOD FOR YOU

VERSE 16. Always rejoice.

Rejoice always. We are commanded to be joyful always.

Ephesians 5:19. speaking to one another in psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs; singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.

Philippians 3:1. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord! To write the same things to you, to me indeed is not tiresome, but for you it is safe.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18. Always rejoice. 17 Pray without ceasing. 18In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

Pray without ceasing. We are commanded to pray continually. There was a man in Russia called the Pilgrim. He gave his life to praying continually.

VERSE 18. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the First Letter to the Thessalonians and from the entire Bible.

In everything give thanks. We are commanded to always be thankful. In every situation, there is always something we can thank God for.

The Greek word for “give thanks” is εὐχαριστεῖτε (“eucharisteite”). It means to thank, to give thanks, to sing, to receive with thanks. lt literally means “thankful for God’s good grace.” Hence it seems an oxymoron that one could be grumpy yet thankful.

this is the will of God … toward you. This is the only verse we are aware of in the New Testament that tells us the will of God. It is God’s will that we are thankful.

Psalm 50:14. Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving. Pay your vows to the Most High.

1 Timothy 1:12. I thank him who enabled me, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he counted me faithful, appointing me to service;

1 Thessalonians 5:18. In everything give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus toward you.
