False apostles had persuaded the believers in Corinth that Paul was not an apostle. So Paul writes to convince them that he is indeed an authentic apostle.

SUMMARY

Few portions of the New Testament pose as many challenges for translators and interpreters as 2 Corinthians. For that reason, few provide a systematic exposition of it.

AUTHOR. There are a few portions that might possibly be non-Pauline interpolations. But most experts agree that 2 Corinthians came from the heart of the Apostle Paul, and not from somebody else writing in the name of Paul.

RECIPIENTS. The Christians believers in Corinth. Paul had founded their community in about 51 AD, during his first missionary journey (see Acts 18).

PLACE AND DATE. It is likely that Paul wrote this letter from Macedonia, prior to the winter of winter of 56-57 AD.

PURPOSE: False teachers showed up in Corinth. They claimed to be apostles and entered the church. They promoted their own ideas and tried to discredit Paul. They wreaked havoc.

So Paul defends the authenticity of his apostleship and his message.

2 Corinthians 6:6. in pureness, in knowledge, in perseverance, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love,

2 Corinthians 6:7. in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

2 Corinthians 6:8. by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true;

2 Corinthians 6:9. as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and not killed;

2 Corinthians 6:10. as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.

2 Corinthians 6:17. Therefore “ ‘Come out from among them, and be separate,’ says the Lord. ‘Touch no unclean thing. I will receive you.

2 Corinthians 8:9. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.

2 Corinthians 9:6. Remember this: he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly. He who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.

2 Corinthians 9:7. Let each man give according as he has determined in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion. for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:8. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, that you, always having all sufficiency in everything, may abound to every good work.

2 Corinthians 10:4. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. (NIV translation)
