3 John

John the Evangelist wrote the Third Letter of John to Gaius. He commends Gaius, and makes recommendations about two people.

SUMMARY

AUTHOR. “The elder,” as the author of 3 John calls himself, is probably the same as the author of 2 John.

RECIPIENTS. It is addressed to Gaius, who is otherwise unknown.

DATE. Similarities between 3 John with 1 John and 2 John suggest they were written at around the same time, perhaps around 100 AD, and perhaps at Ephesus.

PURPOSE:

  • To commend Gaius
  • To recommend that Gaius meet Demetrius
  • To warns Gaius against Diotrephes
