SUMMARY

Title

The Book is named for its author.

Author

The author of this book is Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi.

The name Ezekiel means “God will strengthen” or “God will harden.”

Ezekiel and Jeremiah and Zechariah were the only prophet-priests. All three prophesied during the exile or post-exile eras.

Date

Ezekiel’s ministry began in the fourth month on the fifth day of the fifth year of the exile of King Jehoiachin (see Ezekiel 1:1-2). That was July 31, 593 BC.

Ezekiel’s ministry ended in the 27th year, in the first month on the first day (see Ezekiel 29:17). That was March 26, 571 BC.

Purpose

Ezekiel was among the exiles deported to Babylon during the rule of Nebuchadnezzar.

His ministry was to prepare his fellow captives for the fall of Jerusalem. Few people believed him, until it happened in 587 BC.

Then after the fall of Jerusalem, Ezekiel’s message centered on the future restoration of Judah.

Ezekiel has a unique focus on the majesty of the LORD God. His prophecies are delivered by means of mystical visions.

His writing are among the great literary and spiritual portions of the Old Testament.
