SUMMARY
Title
The book is named for its author: Isaiah the son of Amoz.
The name “Isaiah” means “YHWH is salvation.”
Author
The prophet Isaiah probably lived in Jerusalem. He may have been a cousin of king Uzziah.
Isaiah was married. His wife was a prophet.
He had two sons.
Isaiah passed away after the death of king Hezekiah, which was in 686 B.C. He ministered as a prophet for at least 58 years.
A recent trend among biblical scholars is to divide up the Book of Isaiah and claim that different people wrote the different parts.
But for almost all of history, both Jews and Christians believed it was all from Isaiah himself.
Date
Where was Isaiah situated in the history of the Hebrew people? Who were his fellow prophets? What kings were reigning?
Making a timeframe for Isaiah is quite a project. For one thing, there are three nations to track:
- The northern kingdom, usually referred to as Israel.
- The southern kingdom, usually referred to as Judah.
- That pesky nation of Assyria.
Each of those has its own line of kings. And prophets.
Sometimes the kings overlap. Any one kingdom might have more than one king at once.
The biblical narratives do not give an exhaustive portrayal of the information we needed. We need to go to other sources.
Those other sources disagree on many factors, requiring us to vet the information sources.
And sometimes we need to make an educated guess, knowing it might be wrong.
Here is our own timeline of the prophet Isaiah: open as a PDF in a new tab.
Purpose
Isaiah reminds his readers of the special relationship they have with the LORD God as members of his covenant community.
So Isaiah calls the people of Judah back to a proper covenantal relationship with the LORD God.
Isaiah points out to his generation their state of sinful living and its consequences. Their nation will be judged and sent into exile. But later they will be restored.
Isaiah addresses two groups of people. First, the people of his own generation. They had strayed from the covenant of Moses.
And second, the people of a future generation, those who will be in exile.
