Until modern times, church tradition uniformly held Luke to be the author of Luke and Acts.

RECIPIENTS

Several lines of evidence point to the conclusion that Luke wrote primarily for Gentiles:

Luke frequently explained Jewish localities. This would be unnecessary if he were writing to Jewish people.

Luke traced Jesus’ genealogy all the way back to Adam, rather than back to Abraham. The implication is that Jesus represents all people rather than just the Jewish people.

Luke referred to Roman emperors in designating the dates of Jesus’ birth and of John the Baptist’s preaching.

Luke used a number of words which would be more familiar to Gentile readers than the comparable Jewish terms found in Matthew’s Gospel. An example is Luke’s use of the Greek didaskalos rather than rhabbi for “teacher.”

For the most part, Luke used the Septuagint when quoting from the Old Testament.

Little is said about Jesus’ fulfilling prophecies, because that theme was not nearly so important to Gentile readers as it was to Jewish readers.

The Gospel of Luke was probably written several years before the time of Nero’s persecution. A timeframe of 58 to 60 AD fits well.

First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye.

Luke 20:47. who devour widows’ houses, and for a pretense make long prayers: these will receive greater condemnation.”

Luke 24:47. and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Commands of Jesus Christ

SPIRITUALITY

The spirituality of the Gospel of Luke is the spirituality of the devotional love of God. You might call it the spirituality of the heart.

Unlike Matthew, Mark and John, Luke is a Gentile. He wrote the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. Paul referred to Luke as the beloved physician.

That’s because Luke was a medical doctor. To be able to be trained as a doctor, Luke would need to have to been an intellectual. But his vast writings convey more than intellectuality.

The Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles show us that Luke had a great, heartfelt devotion to Christ. There’s a very emotional aspect to Luke. He notices beauty. He sees sunsets.

He may have been a romantic. Matthew captures thinking and Mark captures action, but Luke captures loving feelings.

The things that Luke observes and writes will make his Gospel appealing to certain people: those with a deep devotional love of God. People who are in love with Christ, those who thirst for God, those who long for God, those who go on retreats, those who enjoy affective devotional practices: they’ll find the Gospel of the beloved physician a great place to come home to.

If the four Gospel writers were likened to the parts of a body, we see Luke as the heart.

The spirituality of the Gospel of Luke is the spirituality of heartfelt devotion, emotions and beauty. Such a person might appreciate beautiful music or go to art exhibits. They probably feel things rather deeply. They enjoy retreats. They might have charismatic or Pentecostal gifts. This is the spirituality of emotive love.

Here are two Bible verses that capture this spirituality of Luke:

Wisdom 10:12. Devotion to God is mightier than all else. (NAB)

Luke 24:32. They said to one another, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?”

If Luke is your spirituality, you’ll want to read anything related to heartfelt devotion.

If the people of the spirituality of love have a weakness, it’s that life is sweetness and happy feelings. It’s hard to cast out demons when your heart is on fire with love. The fire of the Holy Spirit burns hot within them, and they might see reading and study as an obstacle to love and prayer.
