Hosea chapter 14

Hosea calls them to repent. If they repent, the LORD God will restore them. Hosea summarizes his entire message.

HOSEA CALLS THEM TO REPENT

VERSE 1. Israel, return to the LORD your God; for you have fallen because of your sin.

return to the LORD your God. This is the message they needed to hear.

They rejected it.

VERSE 2. Take words with you, and return to the LORD. Tell him, “Forgive all our sins, and accept that which is good: so we offer our lips like bulls.

Forgive all sin and accept the good we do. We will offer prayer instead of animals.

Take words with you. Repentance begins with words. We begin by confessing our sins.

To sin is to violate God’s will for us. It harms our relationship with God. We all have missed the mark and sinned. Here are the verses we’ve found »

VERSE 3. Assyria can’t save us. We won’t ride on horses; neither will we say any more to the work of our hands, ‘Our gods!’ for in you the fatherless finds mercy.”

IF THEY REPENT, THE LORD GOD WILL RESTORE THEM

VERSE 4. “I will heal their waywardness. I will love them freely; for my anger is turned away from him.

I will heal their waywardness. Or “I will heal their defection” (NAB translation).

VERSE 5. I will be like the dew to Israel. He will blossom like the lily, and send down his roots like Lebanon.

send down his roots like Lebanon. Israel is compared with a cedar of Lebanon. Those cedars had deep roots, luxuriant growth, and pleasant aroma.

VERSE 6. His branches will spread, and his beauty will be like the olive tree, and his fragrance like Lebanon.

VERSE 7. Men will dwell in his shade. They will revive like the grain, and blossom like the vine. Their fragrance will be like the wine of Lebanon.

VERSE 8. Ephraim, what have I to do any more with idols? I answer, and will take care of him. I am like a green cypress tree; from me your fruit is found.”

HOSEA SUMMARIZES HIS ENTIRE MESSAGE

VERSE 9. Who is wise, that he may understand these things? Who is prudent, that he may know them? For the ways of the LORD are right, and the righteous walk in them; But the rebellious stumble in them.

Who is wise. Hosea summarizes his entire message in three points:

the ways of the LORD are right. The covenantal demands of the LORD God are right.

the righteous walk in them. Which people are righteous? The ones who obey the LORD.

the rebellious stumble in them. Rebels stumble because they disobey the LORD God.
