Philemon

Philemon was a rich Christian and a church leader. He had a slave named Onesimus who ran away. Paul urges Philemon to release Onesimus from slavery.

SUMMARY

AUTHOR. Three times in the epistle the author refers to himself as Paul.

RECIPIENTS. Philemon. He was a wealthy Christian and a leader in the church in Colosse.

PLACE AND DATE. Paul was a prisoner when he wrote this Letter. It was during his first imprisonment in Rome, which was in 61 to 62 AD. It is referred to as one of the “prison epistles.”

PURPOSE. Philemon had a slave named Onesimus who had ran away. Paul writes to Philemon, urging him to release Onesimus from slavery.
