Philippians chapter 2

We should imitate the humility of the Lord Jesus Christ. We should shine for him. Paul will send Timothy to Philippi. [UPDATED]

IMITATE THE HUMILITY OF JESUS CHRIST

VERSE 1. If therefore there is any exhortation in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any tender mercies and compassion,

VERSE 2. make my joy full by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind;

VERSE 3. doing nothing through rivalry or through conceit, but in humility, each counting others better than himself;

This verse is fantastic! Would you consider memorizing it? More great verses to memorize from the Letter to the Philippians.

each counting others better than himself. This is the proper attitude of a Christian.

We should not be strutting around with big egos. Instead, we are to consider our fellow believers to be better than ourselves.

VERSE 4. each of you not just looking to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.

VERSE 5. Have this in your mind, which was also in Christ Jesus,

NAB translation: Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus.

Your attitude. As believers, what is the “attitude” we must develop?

the same as that of Christ Jesus. How can we improve our attitude so that it is the same as that of Jesus Christ?

VERSE 6. who, existing in the form of God, didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped,

existing in the form of God. That is, Jesus Christ has the “nature” of God the Father.

equality with God. Jesus Christ has equality with God the Father.

didn’t consider equality with God a thing to be grasped. Divinity was his by right. Jesus Christ did not need to grasp onto it as if he might lose it.

VERSE 7. but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men.

emptied himself. In what sense did Jesus Christ pour himself out?

taking the form of a servant. The Hebrew word is δούλου (“doulou”). It means slave. Jesus Christ voluntarily divested his Divine prerogatives.

VERSE 8. And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, yes, the death of the cross.

VERSE 9. Therefore God also highly exalted him, and gave to him the name which is above every name,

the name which is above every name. That is, Kyrios, or “Lord.”

VERSE 10. that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, those on earth, and those under the earth,

of those in heaven. That is, angels.

those on earth. That is, living people.

those under the earth. That is, deceased persons.

VERSE 11. and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

every tongue should confess. Even the powers of darkness.

Jesus Christ is Lord. Jesus Christ is “Kyrios.”

SHINE FOR JESUS CHRIST

VERSE 12. So then, my beloved, even as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. This verse does not tell us to “earn” our own salvation by good works.

Rather, it calls us to live as fruitful disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

VERSE 13. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

Isaiah 45:14. The LORD says: “The labor of Egypt, and the merchandise of Ethiopia, and the Sabeans, men of stature, will come over to you, and they will be yours. They will go after you. They shall come over in chains. They will bow down to you. They will make supplication to you: ‘Surely God is in you; and there is no one else. There is no other god.

1 Corinthians 3:16. Don’t you know that you are a temple of God, and that God’s Spirit lives in you?

Philippians 2:13. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure.

This verse is referred to in a famous book on continuous prayer called The Way of a Pilgrim.

VERSE 14. Do all things without complaining and arguing,

Some people are always complaining. Or arguing. Those are destructive habits. They harm the individual. And the community. They need to STOP. Read more »

VERSE 15. that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world,

VERSE 16. holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ, that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain.

VERSE 17. Yes, and if I am poured out on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I rejoice, and rejoice with you all.

VERSE 18. In the same way, you also rejoice, and rejoice with me.

PAUL WILL SEND TIMOTHY TO PHILIPPI

VERSE 19. But I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon, that I also may be cheered up when I know how you are doing.

to send Timothy to you soon. Not only did Paul give them the gospel and lead them to faith in Jesus Christ, but he also wanted to be sure they were growing spiritually.

In other words, Paul exercised both the ministry of Evangelism and the ministry of Discipleship.

VERSE 20. For I have no one else like-minded, who will truly care about you.

no one else like-minded. The Greek word is hisopsychon. It literally means “no one of equal soul.” It is often translated as “no one else like him.”

VERSE 21. For they all seek their own, not the things of Jesus Christ.

they all seek their own. In a world of self-centered Christians, Timothy stood out as a rare gem.

VERSE 22. But you know the proof of him, that as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.

as a child serves a father. Paul considered certain people to be his children, in a spiritual sense. Maybe he brought them into the faith. Maybe he trained them as disciples.

Do you have any “children,” in a spiritual sense?

1 Corinthians 4:14. I don’t write these things to shame you, but to admonish you as my beloved children.

Galatians 4:19. My little children, of whom I am again in travail until Christ is formed in you—

Philipplians 2:22. But you know the proof of him, that as a child serves a father, so he served with me in furtherance of the Good News.

1 Thessalonians 3:7. for this cause, brothers, we were comforted over you in all our distress and affliction through your faith.

3 John 1:4. I have no greater joy than this: to hear about my children walking in truth.

VERSE 23. Therefore I hope to send him at once, as soon as I see how it will go with me.

VERSE 24. But I trust in the Lord that I myself also will come shortly.

VERSE 25. But I counted it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and your apostle and servant of my need,

VERSE 26. since he longed for you all, and was very troubled because you had heard that he was sick.

VERSE 27. For indeed he was sick, nearly to death, but God had mercy on him, and not on him only, but on me also, that I might not have sorrow on sorrow.

VERSE 28. I have sent him therefore the more diligently, that when you see him again, you may rejoice, and that I may be the less sorrowful.

VERSE 29. Receive him therefore in the Lord with all joy, and hold such people in honor,

VERSE 30. because for the work of Christ he came near to death, risking his life to supply that which was lacking in your service toward me.
