Psalm 101

A life of integrity.

 


 

A LIFE OF INTEGRITY

A Psalm by David.

 

VERSE 1. I will sing of loving kindness and justice. To you, LORD, I will sing praises.

I will sing. David is talking about himself. For David, it often seems to be all about himself.

loving kindness and justice. David bases his kingship on these qualities.

 

VERSE 2. I will be careful to live a blameless life. When will you come to me? I will walk within my house with a blameless heart.

I will be careful. David is talking about himself. For David, it often seems to be all about himself.

a blameless heart. David commits himself to living a life of integrity.

within my house. David’s life of integrity begins within his own house.

 

VERSE 3. I will set no vile thing before my eyes. I hate the deeds of faithless men. They will not cling to me.

vile thing. Literally “things of Belial.”

faithless men. David hates people who deal crookedly.

 

VERSE 4. A perverse heart will be far from me. I will have nothing to do with evil.

perverse. The Hebrew word is iqqeish. It means crooked, twisted.

Think of a modern-day politician.

 

VERSE 5. I will silence whoever secretly slanders his neighbor. I won’t tolerate one who is arrogant and conceited.

 

VERSE 6. My eyes will be on the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me. He who walks in a perfect way, he will serve me.

My eyes will be on the faithful. David will search for faithful people to be his companions.

 

VERSE 7. He who practices deceit won’t dwell within my house. He who speaks falsehood won’t be established before my eyes.

 

VERSE 8. Morning by morning, I will destroy all the wicked of the land, to cut off all the workers of iniquity from the LORD’s city.

cut off. This could mean removal from office. But it could also mean capital punishment.
