Enthronement of the Messiah as king.

 


 

ENTHRONEMENT OF THE MESSIAH AS KING

A Psalm by David.

 

VERSE 1. The LORD says to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.”

Mark 12:36. For David himself said in the Holy Spirit, ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet.” ’

The LORD. That is, the One God of Israel.

my Lord. At first glance, this might seem to refer to the king. However, this psalm is David writing about himself. He is referring to his own Lord, his own king, his own adonay. David is referring to the Messiah.

says. David is overhearing a conversation between God the Father and the Messiah.

right hand. The Bible often mentions “the right hand” of God. That is a position of power and honor. We believe it refers to Jesus Christ. More verses about the right hand.

your footstool. In those days, victorious kings would put their feet on the backs of enemies they captured. It is a picture of complete subjugation.

Hebrews 8:1. Now in the things which we are saying, the main point is this. We have such a high priest, who sat down on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens,

 

VERSE 2. The LORD will send out the rod of your strength out of Zion. Rule among your enemies.

the rod of your strength. That is, the scepter of the king. It symbolizes rule over enemies.

 

VERSE 3. Your people offer themselves willingly in the day of your power, in holy array. Out of the womb of the morning, you have the dew of your youth.

offer themselves willingly. The followers of the Messiah will willingly offer themselves in his service.

in the day of your power. That is, on the day of the king’s enthronement.

in holy array. To authentically serve the Messiah, a believer must be holy.

2 Peter 3:11. Therefore since all these things will be destroyed like this, what kind of people ought you to be in holy living and godliness,

Out of the womb of the morning. That is, in the early morning.

 

VERSE 4. The LORD has sworn, and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.”

a priest forever. The followers of the Messiah will have an eternal High Priest.

VERSE 5. The Lord is at your right hand. He will crush kings in the day of his wrath.

He will crush kings. The Messiah will defeat the kings of the world.

 

VERSE 6. He will judge among the nations. He will heap up dead bodies. He will crush the ruler of the whole earth.

VERSE 7. He will drink of the brook on the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

drink of the brook. We can be refreshed from the brook along the way. Our spiritual friends can refresh us and help us be victorious!

he will lift up his head. That is, he will be exalted.
