Psalm 112

Lavishly give to poor people.

LAVISHLY GIVE TO POOR PEOPLE

VERSE 1. Praise the LORD! Blessed is the man who fears the LORD, who delights greatly in his commandments.

delights greatly in his commandments. Do you experience delight when you follow the commands of the LORD God?

VERSE 2. His offspring will be mighty in the land. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

VERSE 3. Wealth and riches are in his house. His righteousness endures forever.

Wealth and riches. If you walk with the LORD God, will he necessarily make you wealthy?

VERSE 4. Light dawns in the darkness for the upright, gracious, merciful, and righteous.

Light dawns in the darkness. A day will arrive when God’s light bursts into our lives.

VERSE 5. It is well with the man who deals graciously and lends. He will maintain his cause in judgment.

deals graciously and lends. That is, “All goes well for those gracious in lending” (NAB translation).

Question: Are you gracious in lending? The Old Testament people are. They are generous to the poor.

VERSE 6. For he will never be shaken. The righteous will be remembered forever.

VERSE 7. He will not be afraid of evil news. His heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD.

VERSE 8. His heart is established. He will not be afraid in the end when he sees his adversaries.

VERSE 9. He has dispersed, he has given to the poor. His righteousness endures forever. His horn will be exalted with honor.

he has given to the poor. That is,

“Lavishly they give to the poor” (NAB translation).

Question: Do you give to the poor lavishly?

The Old Testament people do. They are marked by their generosity to the poor.

His horn. The horn was a metaphor from the animal world. It symbolized might and power.

VERSE 10. The wicked will see it, and be grieved. He shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away. The desire of the wicked will perish.

The wicked will … be grieved. Wicked people are NOT generous to the poor. They are grieved when they see somebody being generous to poor people.

He shall gnash with his teeth. Wicked people might even rage out when they see somebody being generous to poor people.
