Psalm 52

Like an olive tree planted in the house of God.

LIKE AN OLIVE TREE PLANTED IN THE HOUSE OF GOD

For the Chief Musician. A contemplation by David, when Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul, “David has come to Ahimelech’s house.”

VERSE 1. Why do you boast of mischief, mighty man? God’s loving kindness endures continually.

boast of mischief. Some people brag about the evil things they want to do.

God’s loving kindness endures continually. His loyal love protects us all day long.

VERSE 2. Your tongue plots destruction, like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

like a sharp razor. An evil person’s tongue is as effective as a sharp razor. It is the evil opposite of the Word of God, which is sharper than a double-edged sword.

The Bible is living and active. Sharper than a sword, it discerns our thoughts and intentions. Read more »

VERSE 3. You love evil more than good, lying rather than speaking the truth. Selah.

lying rather than speaking the truth. Lying is as natural to an evil person as breathing.

VERSE 4. You love all devouring words, you deceitful tongue.

devouring words. Evil people speak in order to destroy. That is one of the goals of the thief:

John 10:10. The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly.

VERSE 5. God will likewise destroy you forever. He will take you up, and pluck you out of your tent, and root you out of the land of the living. Selah.

VERSE 6. The righteous also will see it, and fear, and laugh at him, saying,

VERSE 7. “Behold, this is the man who didn’t make God his strength, but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.”

VERSE 8. But as for me, I am like a green olive tree in God’s house. I trust in God’s loving kindness forever and ever.

I am like a green olive tree. David sees himself as a tree. The tree is growing. It is laden with fruit. It bears fruit. In other words, David is breaking fruit.

in God’s house. This olive tree is located within the house of God. In other words, David is growing spiritually.

I trust in God’s loving kindness. David trusts, not just “in God,” but also in the goodness of God.

Many people believe “in God.” Some can even formulate some doctrinal statements.

But they don’t live their lives as though God is good. They assume that some day, God will get them, one dastardly way or other.

James 2:19. You believe that God is one. You do well. The demons also believe, and shudder.

VERSE 9. I will give you thanks forever, because you have done it. I will hope in your name, for it is good, in the presence of your holy ones.
