Psalm 8

David marvels over the majesty of God’s name. God graciously bestows us with human dignity as his ambassadors on earth.

HOW MAJESTIC IS GOD’S NAME

For the Chief Musician; on an instrument of Gath. A Psalm by David.

VERSE 1. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens!

how majestic is your name. The Bible mentions many names of God. Which one is David referring to? The Hebrew word translated as name is שֵׁם (“shem”). It simply means “name.” It does not tell us which “name” David is referring to. We imagine it is the Tetragrammaton, the Hebrew name of God transliterated in four letters as YHWH.

VERSE 2. From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.

Psalm 8:2. From the lips of babes and infants you have established strength, because of your adversaries, that you might silence the enemy and the avenger.

Matthew 21:16. and said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” Jesus said to them, “Yes. Did you never read, ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing babies you have perfected praise?’ ”

VERSE 3. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained;

VERSE 4. what is man, that you think of him? What is the son of man, that you care for him?

what is man, that you think of him? It amazes David that the Lord of the universe even thinks about us humans.

VERSE 5. For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and crowned him with glory and honor.

crowned him with glory and honor. Some people speak as though we humans are nothing before God. They forget all about how important we are to God. And other people focus on sin so much that they forget that God even loves us. Why not accept the biblical view of the human person?

VERSE 6. You make him ruler over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet:

ruler. The Hebrew word for “rule” means “dominion over.”

put all things under his feet.God graciously bestows us with human dignity as his ambassadors on earth:

2 Corinthians 5:20. We are therefore ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were entreating by us: we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

VERSE 7. All sheep and cattle, yes, and the animals of the field,

VERSE 8. the birds of the sky, the fish of the sea, and whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

VERSE 9. LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
